True Detective --Genius or Over Rated?--

I heard a lot about this series and I decided that now is a good time to watch it and give it a chance, because I like detective stories and lots of people say that this series is the best there is now, so with any further introduction… Let’s step on some toes, will you?

Well first I want to say that if I sound harsh on this show you are the ones to blame because I heard things like, ground breaking, genius, and the best, so I had really high expectations on this one, and I got a little disappointed watching it, but ok that was the warning. Also some minor spoilers, and other mayor because hell I’m assuming all the people that read this have already watched, and if you don’t well read the first paragraph and will see that there is not much to spoil :P

The first thing that jumped to my attention was that everybody was praising the way the story develop and the way they deliver exposition in a way the audience doesn’t notice. Well if a narrator is a ground breaking discovery I’m a fairy princess. The first 2 episodes could be called “Exposition part 1 and 2” seriously when it starts with the interview I just thought “Are you going to make talking heads?” that is just lazy writing, because they tell you, literally tell you, what is happening, and insides of the story that a good writer could make them fixing a scene, but no, they put the talking heads to make it easier, so the dumb audience can catch up with the series that start as an old car on a cold winter morning in Siberia. They instead of showing you the dynamic between the characters, they tell you how they felt towards the other, instead of making the events go how it supposed to be they say “Oh I remember that he lived alone” when they could just make a scene when you see it. So the first like 4, 4½ episodes are like that, they forget the “Show, don’t tell rule” they tell you everything and also gets redundant some times because you get narration describing a scene that is happening.

The second thing that I couldn’t let pass was that I heard “It has a great character development” I just thought “What character?” “What development?” the characters are stock characters, all of them, each and every one of them. If you take the characters from this series and make with them a PG-13 movie you get “Lethal Weapon” I mean yes here is darker and edgier but that’s because is not TV is HBO, but you have the strong family man and the gloomy partner with suicidal tendencies. That is fucking Lethal Weapon, we also have the cardboard cut wife, the Angry Screaming Boss of the detectives, the mistress that is so obvious that those two are involved that the freaking frame she was on screen I called it, the crazy killer that I can’t pin point what is the exact movie where I know that archetype but I’m sure is a horror one not detective. And what happen when you have all this stock characters together? Well you have cliché scenes :D hooray! As I said, the first 4½ episodes are clichés one after the other.

Also talking about the private life of the detectives, why the hell does the detectives in 2014 needed to know that one had problems with his wife, of the father of one was in Korea, they were making an investigation about a killing, and they needed to know about the case, so they should have told them “Please try to limit your statement to the facts” Why do they needed to know that Marty’s daughter was an easy girl?. And all the sex scenes are just time consuming stuff, we don’t need to watch boobs every episode (I know for someone that say boobs are an asset I complain a lot about it) I mean is nice to see a pair during the episodes, but are scenes that doesn’t take you anywhere, the whole plot of the mistress of Marty is so irrelevant, that could be done off screen and nobody would have noticed that, damn you can change it for almost anything, drinking, gambling, job addiction, choo choo trains anything! It doesn’t goes further that a pair of boobs and 2 conversations. And why do I need to know all the details of his life? I like to know my characters but not when I’m force feed all that data when I’m supposed to be watching a detective show, they show too much of how do they live, and what the girls of Marty behave, I never cared at all for them.

Most of the characters are because of the actors, they took flat well known characters and performed the way they should, OK they didn’t add anything to the character but their delivery was good, but I mean you have Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

The cinematography that everybody also praise for me wasn’t that good, I mean is pretty good, landscapes as they should look, good camera angles, good movement, but one scene in particular jumped my eye, yes the one shot scene when Rusty goes to the drug house, in that scene I can point 2 moments where they could have cut and nobody would have noticed, damn! I could have done it and I’m an OK editor because the camera just looks at the sky and then goes down and the other is facing a wall and goes out, there are two easy cuts, so I don’t believe that was just one shot. Also when Rusty goes on his truck and it has the tail light broken from the fight with Marty that looked so fake, I know that you have never got a tail light broken for more than 2 days, but one that didn’t had much money I know what is to have a broken tail light on a 80s 90s car for years, and let me tell you that it changes color, and it gets rounded with time, and that looked like was broken yesterday, I’m just going with the flow that people told me that is realistic this show. And the most unrealistic thing of this show is the police response, I mean somebody hear gunshots in a crack house and call the police, and not only that the police arrive in less than 3 minutes with choppers and block streets and everything? Why do they need detectives if they arrive to any crime scene in matter of seconds, too unrealistic, Fun never the less and I like it, but don’t bring me that is realistic.

All the loose ends that they let don’t bother me at all, because are some minimal, but I know one thing, if they say that Audrey was raped by the cult and that makes the season 2 I’m going to be so upset because I called that since the first episodes, the worst for a Detective story is to be predictable.

But hey! The show gets good and interesting from the second half of the episode 5 :D so you have like 3½ good episodes, the characters do stuff and well they don’t develop beyond their mold of stock character or their margins of cardboard but is a good story, if you don’t mind watching some clichés and stock scenes.

So is a good TV show, Awesome? No. Genius? Nop. Ground Breaking? Ha! Hell no! Cerebral? Nah. Over rated? Hell yeah! I will recommend it to a friend if he or she likes detective stories, but I would never recommend it to the point to say “You HAVE to watch True Detective” maybe just because it has all the clichés you might need to avoid to make an original story.

But is good.

Hannibal Season 2 --Is It Too Bloody?--

Hannibal

Reader discretion is advised.

I heard a couple of comments from some friends that didn’t liked what has been broadcasted of the new season of Hannibal, that trigger 2 things in my mind. First why people complain about it, and second, how could I miss it?!

Well the second is that I have been tangled with looking for a job and things like that, that’s why I didn’t noticed and well I can catch up easy.

But the thing that intrigued me the most was, why people complain about it? Well they said that it had no story and it was too bloody, that the first minutes of the second episode are to crude and violent for network television and that it looks like just blood for the seek of blood and violence, so naturally now I had to watch it, because how much is too much?

Well I always say that they put the warning at the beginning because is a series about a serial killer after all, and some blood is to be expected and the first season had a lot of corpses, but that didn’t bother me, I grew up with horror movies and horror TV series, (at the beginning I could not tolerate the sight of blood, but I got over with) So now you can see my need to watch this and have my own opinion, and here it is.

The point that there is more visual than story is wrong as far I can see, because this show is a show that you can enjoy just by watching it even if you don't know the language or enjoy the plot if you are not looking at the screen just hearing what happen just like a radio show, because every conversation is like a chess game, you can see which characters are playing the game and which are just pawns that are oblivious of what is happening and the rhythm of the show is just like you need to make a suspense story, step by step and at the beginning looks like nothing is happening but then accelerate episode by episode until the great chase. But doing that for a show is boring and can lose people at the beginning. So they add more crimes and yes more murders.

I noticed that the show is more about the rituals but not just the ones of the murders but everybody’s because everything that they do is done in a certain way, making everything just not look pretty but important, and that is not only in the movements but how they talk too, that’s why you need to pay attention to every single word, and the way they say it, the intention and what is the real idea underneath.Because each and everyone of us have their own rituals, tie your shoes, brush your teeth, everything. Now you will not see every morning the same :P

I also heard comparing this to “Dexter” well for me that means that they are not paying attention to the show, because they are way too different. Here you have two very different minds working on its own. One (Hannibal) is almost like the math of a serial killer, is cold and always thinking, one step ahead of everybody, and on the other hand we have William he enters the mind of the killers and see the why, he feels the thrill and what they feel, also the pattern, two very different ways of thinking but also the 2 sides of the same coin. And there is how you see them the heart and the brain, logic and emotion, beautiful and sublime (If you didn't got that last one is something like what you like by seeing it and what you need to understand to find the beauty in it). So we have our hero and villain well defined. While Dexter (If you know me will know that I’m not a fan) you have a killer that feels bad for killing, I mean there is no way I can accept it, is supposed that he have some urges to kill and then feels bad about it, but why does he kill? Because he saw his mom dead in a lot of blood? I mean he feels a thrill for killing or what? Any way is not that defined and is more soap opera than actual crime suspense, you see his life, girlfriend everything and just a glimpse of the cases, that’s why I didn’t like it because I never cared for his life.

I also heard that if this were a Cable show it would be OK but not for network, well all the time I hear that Network is not as good as Cable and lots of things, so if this one is like Cable means that Networks are answering to what people want, so that might mean that the era of Good Network TV is at hand, and that is good right, free good TV, I can live in a world like that :D

And looking at all of this I just can say that I’m very happy that there is a show runner ready to make what the plot needs instead to please all the audience, that’s why we have diversity to watch what we like.

So if you can pass from some gruesome parts (that are like 2 minutes every 2 episodes) or you can pay attention during the whole episode or simply is not your genre well you might not like it, but has a good development of the story and characters, everybody is smart and thinking all the time and is a good way to let you forget the world and concentrate in the show.

Also, now you know why the put that warning at the beginning :P

Just checking in

Man! It’s been like 2 weeks since my last post, but the problem is that I have been looking for a job, and if you notice is not that easy, especially if you are an immigrant (I’m legally here so back off!) but everybody thinks that you are going to run back to your country after the first month. Get the hint! I haven’t gone back in 2 years! I’m not leaving, I have put too many money to stay here :S

But that is that, I think I’ll post more movies soon, or games or something. Because I don’t think my life is that cool, or if you like leave a comment and tell me if you would like to know more about my misfortunes and adventures :P

See ya!

Movie Review Dallas Buyers Club

Dallas Buyers Club

I was disappointed of this movie, why? Because I heard that this one was the worst of the nominated and that is a big deal, I mean, worse than the wolf of Wall Street? Those are major words. But no, is not only, not the worst but I think is ranked among the best of the bunch. And here I was prepared to rant for a good long post, but no :S

The movie talks about a guy who gets diagnosed with aids during the 80’s in Texas and he wants some treatment but due to problems and bureaucracy he can’t get it so he goes to get it in Mexico (that against popular belief Mexico actually has a good health care) where he sees that the drugs for treatment are cheaper and work but the FDA don’t want to use it.

So the movie has a good structure and a good message, about the corruption in the health service.

There are some points where it threw me out of the rhythm a little bit like the sex scenes (that are like 2 and are like 1 minute long but even so) but you get some sort of a glimpse of the life of the main protagonist, not only smuggling drugs or fighting the government but also his everyday life.

In this movie you can see a growth in the characters, everybody changes and evolves in a very realistic way, they don’t show the magical change where the drunk, misogynistic, jerk into a caring loving family man, here the jerk turns into a guy who is a little less jerk, but that’s it he helps people and stuff, he finds the good in him.

I think that is very sad that when a movie that have the basic structure, character development, and a plot is to consider the best movie of the 9, and is not that good :S

*** ½ 3 and a half stars (I might be too benevolent but after watching the others feels right)
