Firefly and Serenity

Firefly and Serenity

Yey! Double feature! :D

I think I’m going to commit a deadly sin of the internet, and that is speak my mind about a show that almost everybody loves. Yes Firefly and its movie Serenity, but I think that someone has to raise the voice and say the truth.

So without sugar coating as always let’s take a look on this show that people think is more than good.

I never got why this show is popular I mean is poorly written the characters aren’t that great and highly interchangeable because none of them is quite unique, and the plot can’t find itself no matter how much time you are willing to give it.

I remember when it was new I was a big fan of Buffy and Angel, loved the world, the mythology the interactions, how everybody evolved, so I thought that  it was going to be great a Sci Fi show that had a western vibe (Because that are the sci fi stories, pretty much westerns) But I had a big disappointment when I saw this show, it was all over the place, the characters made no sense and the main story was forgotten after the first 10 minutes of the pilot.

But I thought that I might didn’t remember it as well as I believed so I watched again on netflix and came to the conclusion that is as bad as I remember.

But you might say “Is a great show” well not for me, and here is a dissection to make my point.

First let’s start with the characters, what is wrong with them? Well to start they are way too many you have the Captain, his second in command, the pilot, the gunner, the priest, the doctor, the doctor’s sister, the mechanic and the space whore. So you have a main cast of 9 on the first freaking episode, what do they want? Apparently they are smugglers and are paid to move the Doctor’s sister away from the evil government  (they are just evil) but as smugglers their job is to move and sell merchandise not to steal it and what do you see in episode 2? The crew stealing a train because some guy paid them for that, that is not smugglers that is pirates so they didn’t had it that clear and needed Ser Davos to clear it. Also, the traits of the characters are repetitive like Jayne and ZoĆ« are basically the same character, one is more comedic than the other but in essence are the same, both are the tough guy good for fighting, then we have Mal, Wash and Jayne those three are a comic relief and OK in a core cast of 9 you can have it but you need to let it develop with time, that makes the whole plot look silly and you miss the plot also the interactions between Kaylee and Simon are more comedy. One thing it never sounded right to me was the space whore (things by its name, so back off) yes she was an expensive prostitute, but a prostitute at the end, and she was supposed to be the most important member of the crew for being a diplomat, give me a break. In the era of the cowboys and all that western vibe, prostitutes where the lowest of the food chain, below horses and Mexicans and you want to make me believe that she is going to give them diplomatic powers? Pfff!! Also the relationships on the ship are forced like hell, if that were a copper pipe it would broke years ago. Look at Buffy who was the main cast, Buffy, Giles, Xander and Willow, and Xander and Willow are just support characters you can center on Buffy to learn about her, and then get involved with the rest and eventually add more characters, that’s how you start a series, not just vomiting all the characters you want to put there from beginning. I mean even in the series The 100 where is supposed to be 100 people you center in a main cast of 5 and then they give you a little more taking out some and adding others, you know, keep it fresh.

Other problem is the narrative. OK you have the hole cast and crew of Gone with the Wind and you want to force feed me the back story and traits of each character as fast as you can so you can still have something to call an episode? That is just speeding up the process shamelessly the worst is that you don’t have the time to care for any of the characters because it was like the old joke of a cream pie to the face they throw at you all the story they can but is just fluff and no substance so you watch them and don’t care for them. Another problem with the narrative is the sequence of the episodes and that is that there is none, as long you watch the first episode first you can watch the rest in any order, there is no continuity on the episodes that there actually should be because in one Inara say that she is leaving the ship and the next she is still there, so I suppose she is not ready to go? She changed her mind? Anyway.

The plot, Ah the plot, or better said the lack of it, why do I say the lack of it you say? Well you need a big picture to thread across the individual episodes that will give you a reason to follow the series week after week. Something like the big evil to conquer of escape from an important mission, anything, and you may say “They have to hide from the government” no shit Sherlock! But that is a consequence, or a tool for an end, not a plot. There is people looking for River but you never feel it like a problem is just there and that’s it. Then you have all the crew, that ton of people that is on that ship, everyone is a “mystery” why are they there? Like the priest, he is one useless passenger on the ship and it looks that there is no reason why they keep him onboard, unless he is paying rent there is no need of him.

The universe, here is a great problem because you are dropped into a new universe with their own rules and everything, which I have no problem with but then there is a lot of exposition about everything, and again is force feeding their believes and systems, the writers don’t let the universe to unravel by itself, and the problem is that they don’t deliver the key points of the universe, they give you colour and folklore so you have an impression of what it is but again no substance, is like the Shan Yu stuff that is mention in one episode, that would be more interesting if we had known the character that mentioned a little more no just a few minutes for a couple of episodes, I need to learn more of the character to make me an idea of what is happening inside his/her head but by saying that and then giving exposition about who was Shan Yu, something that pretty much everybody on the show should know at least a little. Another big problem for me is that the Chinese is a culture so important in that universe that people speaks the language, and read those devil scratches they call writing when actually humanity tends to the easiest, that’s why English is so popular, I mean not even the Chinese like Chinese, so to make it a universal thing is too farfetched for me. Other big, big problem for me was that there was no aliens, is way to selfish to think there are no alien life forms in the universe, but here no, everybody are humans and everybody speaks Chinese. The feeling of western is so forced that it doesn’t feel like it, I mean one episode they rob a train, other they rob a bank, other they go “Unforgiven/Magnificent seven” and defend a whorehouse, the show forced too much the western thing that lost it, why? Because they should be more like Pirates of the Caribbean, because that was more suited to the smuggler thing, they are evading the government trading goods of doubtful precedence and with that the show could have been cheaper because the ship would have been a part of everything but no they forced the western thing and ended nowhere.

The tone of the characters is well away from what they wanted to what they are, they tried to make the antiheros and be like taken from an early ‘90s comic book but ended with a bunch of boy scouts that they say they are mean and hard but they are a bunch of do goodies softies that are almost from a Saturday morning cartoon. You want antihero you go all the way, with the mentality of that’s my goal and fuck everything in my way.

There is like the headhunter of the Government but is so disappointing one would expect a Grammaton cleric from equilibrium a man hard that projects power just by stand in front of you or a rabid monster for the seek and destroy only purpose, or a guy that looks normal but deep inside you feel he has something wrong, but no we get this out of shape guy that talks like he is reading his lines without payment and he would prefer to be somewhere else.

So in short, there are too many characters, the universe has more holes than a Swiss cheese there isn’t enough plot to sustain a series, I don’t care for the characters, tries too hard to be something, nothing develops not the plot, or the characters or the universe, so is a mediocre first try of a sketch.

But then why people love it so much, well most of the people that like it are writers or nerds that want to be writers, the characters every one of them are the best in what they do, and a stock character of some sort of RPG so people wants to be them because they are the “good guys” but also some kind of antiheros that they are not so people want to think is a good show or at least original, which is not.

And the other part, the writers they see the story and they fill the gaps with their own ideas, the characters that we don’t know anything about they create the backstory on their heads, and also create the whole thing that could have happened in the future, but that doesn’t make a great show, that makes a good first bible of a show to get interested people and get investors.

The movie is no better, first by some reason we learn that River is the best fighter in the universe because the government made her that way, thing that could have been useful in the show, then she needs to go to a planet and there you learn that the government is more evil and experimented on people, and River was there and all the planet died or turned into Reavers (I’ll go back to the Reavers in a moment) wait a second, River was taken when she was little because she had ESPN or something and they trained her and experimented on her but, How did she end in that planet? How she survived? How the government took her again? If the Reavers are so wild and angry why they didn’t killed each other? How the Reavers create a society? How does that society works? Why they didn’t killed the other half of the population that where sleep? If only where a colony that went crazy why the government didn’t vaporized the Ravers? If the Reavers are like animals, how do they manage to make the ships fly and keep formations and feed the fuel and keep them working?

The Reavers are a great part on Firefly and Serenity because they are like the random factor, the chaos but they are just a cameo on the series and you never have a good glimpse on them, they are again the children cartoon mean guy, you never see what’s beyond that because there isn’t they are just crazy psychos. In borderlands they handled way better, because Psychos are just crazy people that run and kill people they don’t fly ships or have a big pack they are loners because they would kill each other, and in Red Faction: Guerrilla the idea of the crazy people around is there but they are not actually crazy that’s just a screen to make the government leave them alone, they are they brain of the resistance, scientists against the government.

So the main goal of Serenity is to broadcast a video of the planet saying that the government created the Reavers and killed people, but most of the people already know that the government is evil and other don’t even care so is a worthless plan that will have no repercussions on the story.

Well that was long but if you made it this far well congrats :P

So I finished, send the hate troops

Books vs E-reader

I just bought an E-reader and is a great piece of technology, that got me thinking, why there are so many paper books when everything could be electronic? The question came up because I saw all the advantages of an e-reader so I’ll say everything good about this and then my idea for a better future.

I don’t hate books, or think they are obsolete, I love how they look, how they feel, how they smell, the way they crack when you open them for the first time or how they feel after you finish them, the weight of a heavy book or the size of an small one, is great to have a book as a present because you don’t know anything about it most of the time, so you can see if the person knows you or what they think about you just by reading the back cover, so in one sentence books are great.

Some articles say “Some readers have internet, and colour screens and mp3” well to hell with those, I want to read a book, not behave like a 13 year old when is supposed to do his homework, also I bought the cheapest of the cheapest, the Kobo Touch, so here are the benefits of an e-reader.

First you can display the letters as big or small as you see them fit, yes no more adjusting how far the book should be just to read it, you control the size of the letters.

No more different fonts for my eyes (well only when I want it) because you can also control that, so if an editor wanted to look cool and uses a weird font you can change it back.

No more problems whit you languages, sometimes you read a book that has some words that you are not used to it, and if you are like me you run to the dictionary and see what it is, but if you are no vacation, most people don’t carry a dictionary all the time, I don’t, so you have to search the internet, and that means to turn on the computer that it might be in a different place and even turned off, or get an idea of the word by context, that is good but not great. Well e-readers have a build in dictionary and not just one, they have like 8, one for each language, so even if is your second or third language you’ll always know the meaning of each strange word.

This is my E-reader, as you can see I have books in Spanish too, this one was one I lost and now I have it in electronic format, A cookie to the person who can point the photoshop :D

Are you finishing a book? No problem! Again with the trips, but it had happened to any of you that you are reading a book and you are about to finish it but you are going on vacation and think, “I never read in my vacation maybe a couple of minutes in the airplane, I’ll never finish it in this trip” and then there are delays and the airplane movie just don’t do it and before takeoff you have finished and the next book you want to read is in your home or in the suitcase that you register? Well not anymore, because with this little fella you can have 1000 books ready to read, and if you can read 1000 books in the airport you are really fast or living in the airport, anyhow if you put the extra memory on the reader you can have30,000 books ready to roll, and if you can read 30,000 books waiting for your plane I think you already read every single book ever written.

No extra weight, you are carrying less than 200 grams no matter how fat the book you are reading also is the same space as a small notebook.

You can read anywhere, some people like to read under the sun, others in their houses under their favorite lamp, well a reader is just like a book, you can read anywhere you want, no problem at all.

Want to search for a specific part but can’t remember the page, the reader has a finder, also you can mark pages, make little virtual folds in the corners underline phrases and make annotations! Better than a book because if you don’t what any of those you can remove them and there is no harm on the book.

I’m not the kind of guy who wants to show the books that he has read like the heads of the animals I killed, so everybody can see that I read, if I read it that is fine by me, so I don’t care if my bookshelf has a ton of books or just an e-reader.

Some people say that is harder to borrow books whit e-readers well is just like “borrow” music, movies, software, images and almost everything that is on the internet… Arrrr!

There is a ton of e-books for free out there, because I don’t think that Jane Austen keep getting money for her books, so those are free.

Someone said that he didn’t want to take his e-reader to the tub because if it got wet it would stop working. Well dude if you get a book wet it also gets ruined, I don’t take my books to the tub so I’m not going to take my e-reader there.

You are not going to struggle with that hard split on the book, I like to hold my books with one hand but if you are reading something like “The Name Of The Wind” you have to stretch that book because the middle between both sides is always curved so you have to use both hands or move your head a lot, but with an e-reader you just read one page at a time and always perfectly flat.

It tells you how long did it take you to read the book in actual reading time!

That is everything I can think by now but I’m sure there are tons more of benefits.

I’m not saying that books should disappear but what I like to see happen is that everybody had an e-reader and actual paper books became something that you give as a high end present, a really great gift.

Avril Lavigne Album review.

OK first of all I want to say that I’m a fan of the little blond Canadian or use to be, why use to be? Well because of this album mostly but I’ll explain a little more, so grab a cup of Timmy’s bring the family and gather around for my first review of a music album.

Well first I want to show my credentials, because you can say I don’t liked that song or that other thing, but why can you say that if you don’t know the artist, if you are not familiar with his/her work? That is what makes deeper your statement, if you know it, you don’t have to like it, but know it. So yes first how I started to like her.

But I realized it was too long so you can just click here to read the whole story :P

Well now the real deal, what happens with the album that is not that great? Well I was listening to the first video “Never growing up” and I hear something off, something that wasn’t right wasn’t the voice but I didn’t like it as the past albums, so I forgot about it and keep going with my life then the “Hello Kitty” song came out and everybody said that it was horrible, so I had to listen to it, and it was not that bad but I saw in YouTube that there were more videos from the last album and oh, the horror. I listen to every single song of the new album and I concluded what happened…

She turned into Nickelback! One of the worst things that could ever happen to anyone! And I realized what was the thing that was off about the song never growing up, and the rest of the album, is the rhythm! Avril has a very particular way of singing how her voice is part of the melody, where she takes the high notes and where she makes longer the words and in that album she was hitting all the wrong places, sounds like she doesn’t know her own strengths or even her natural rhythm, is like she try to sing like somebody else, is just awful, like a train wreck or somebody choking on her own blood.

Also I saw that the best 2 songs of the album were Never Growing Up and Hello Kitty, and are not in the same level as the worst of the other albums.

Never Growing Up is a song where you are waiting that the tempo of the song pick up, to have some ups and downs like a normal song, but you just wait for the song to “get to the good part” and never gets there, is just the same pace, I feel that it was like the first draft of the song, just the first idea and never work on it again, feels like it got stuck on the beginning, but in some level it feels still like Avril.

Hello Kitty for me is the best song of the album, but not because is great, but because the album is very bad, the song is fun, it would be a good song as filler of a good album, but is by no means a good song to buy the album for it, is repetitive and also if you pay attention to the lyrics you can see that is not a song written by a girl, because it has some connotations that can be taken as sexual references from a guy to a girl, because is calling a girl (That is the kitty) to have a slumber party and is tells the girl to invite more girls, and calling them silly. I know this might seem a little far fetch or a stretch but if you listen to the rest of her albums she is always very direct and this one feels like somebody else gave her this song. Also I don’t think the video is racist is just a way to hide the lyrics, because it has nothing to do with the cartoon “Hello Kitty”

And for the rest of the songs, they feel like nickelback and that is never a good thing.

Even the cover is awful, I think that always reflect something of the album, what was going to be, some evolution, but here is just… that.

So if you want to buy the album it would be against my advice because this one is nothing like any of the past ones, there is no feeling in it, no evolution or even a hint of life in it.

My History With A. Ramona Lavigne

I’m not afraid of admitting that I like Avril Ramona Lavigne (Yes her middle name is Ramona) you can check my FB and there says that I like her. Some people might say it was at first sight but I don’t believe in that, because you may like how something looks at first sight, but to really like something you have to appreciate it and you need to understand it to fully appreciate it. So yes, I really like her music and I think she is beautiful and talented or I did until the last album.  That will be explained in the next post in like 10 minutes after I posted this one.  :P

It sounded really weird for everybody that knew me when they heard I liked the first album, because the guy with the gigantic poster of Rammstein on his wall, lots of speed metal and who dress like a psychopath is really weird to like some girly stuff, right? Well, at first I didn’t like her, I remember when the first video came out I was in MĆ©xico and there we have the channel “Sony” and at the time they had music videos between shows and “Complicated” was there around noon and every time I changed the channel without even giving it a chance.

I always thought “Is just a pretty girl, like a skater Barbie” but by the same reason I never wanted to watch it. So my life kept on going until one day a guy from my Dungeons and Dragons group asked me to leave his discman on my backpack (Yes, discman) and inside had Avril’s album "Let Go", he forgot to ask for it and left. A couple of hours later I realized that I had it, but I was already home so I decided to hear the CD, why? Because it was black with a red star and no name on it, so I needed to know what was in it, but I listened to the CD skipping songs, just listening to the first seconds, until I heard “Skater Boy” the intro of the song caught me, then I heard more songs and liked them, so I returned the CD and Discman and bought one for myself (a CD not a discman :P ) and listen to it a lot. Well I really liked it, the lyrics, the feeling everything there hit me really hard, even the pitch of her voice was great for me. And I know that I sound like a serial killer when I say that but that is how it was, besides my brother tells me that I have a lot of the traits of a serial killer. Also I started to watch the videos, and even joined the street crew, that was the official Avril’s fan club, that then got dissolved and turned into other thing that you had to pay for it so fuck it, I don’t have the money.

So I kept buying the CD’s and watching videos and more Fan stuff. And I liked every album because you could see her grew, not every song was a hit but I saw a reflection of her life in every album, “Let Go” the door to adulthood, “Under My Skin” anger and hurt, “The Best Damn Thing” standing for herself like –I’m not going to be hurt again–, Goodbye Lullaby Sadness, but keeping it strong -She got hurt again-

But now… Well just read the review

Jaime Lannister: Ruined or just Character Development?

A lot of people complained about the episode of Game of Thrones broadcasted the last April 20 2014 and the main reason I heard a lot was about Jaime Lannister being outside of character, because they say Jaime was redeeming himself and he being protective of Brienne and stuff, that people started to like him. Well I like the character, I almost like every single character in the story, ones more than others, I only don’t like Daenerys Mary Sue Targaryen, but that is for a complete different post.

So let’s see what is so redeemable of the good “King Slayer”

1 Killed the Aerys “Mad King” Targaryen (King he was supposed to follow blindly)
2 High treason, for sleeping with the queen. (Cersei’s idea but anyway)
3 Killed the 2 sons of Rickard Karstark (In battle but OK)
4 Killed his cousin to create a distraction.
5 Try to kill Brienne more several times, by his hand or by making her fight.
6 Advices Brienne to kill a merchant so he doesn’t talk.
7 Advices Brienne that is better if she let them rape her (Is better than being beaten and raped)

And that is so far, also what I could remember but what is so redeemable about him? He saved Brienne? He did that because she was going to be killed and he had an Oath to Catelyn Stark it could have been a guard or a horse. But also is the point where I say he is a complicated character, as he said “I have so many oaths that some contradict each other”

But I paid attention to the comments and the articles and I know how to find the subtext and read between the lines and what people was saying was “I like the character and I thought he was good, but now he does something I don’t like” Well tough, is the good part in the series, characters are complex and they are not going to be from one side or the other, sometimes they are going to do stuff that is not that good. So deal with it.
